We don’t fix loneliness. We sit next to it.

Who will you sit with today?

Maine Sunshine Companions connects caring volunteers with elders in our community for meaningful companionship. Through simple moments — conversation, games, shared stories, and presence — companions help bring warmth, connection, and comfort into everyday life.

What does a volunteer do?

A Sunshine Companion is a trained volunteer who visits an elder in their home to offer friendship, conversation, and shared activities that bring connection and joy.

Examples of companionship:

  • Conversation and listening

  • Games, cards, puzzles

  • Reading together

  • Light outings (when arranged)

  • Helping with basic tech (calls, email, video chats)

  • Transportation to appointments may be available in some situations, by arrangement.
All transportation support is discussed and agreed upon in advance.

What a volunteer does NOT do:

Sunshine Companions do not provide medical care, personal care, or housekeeping.
We are not:

  • Nursing or medication support

  • Bathing/toileting care

  • House cleaning or home maintenance

  • Financial management or legal help

If your family needs those supports, we can help you find the right resources.

We know you will have some questions! Here are some answers to commonly asked quesitons!

  • Yes, all Sunshine Companions complete an application, background check, references, and orientation before being matched with an elder.

  • You’ll love this if you:

    • Enjoy listening and connecting

    • Are reliable and consistent

    • Can hold boundaries with kindness

    • Believe presence matters

This may not be a fit if you:

    • Want a caregiving/clinical role

    • Prefer fast-paced volunteering

    • Feel uncomfortable with quiet or slow moments

    • Want to “fix” or direct

    1. Fill out the inquiry form

    2. Brief conversation + application

    3. Background check + references

    4. Orientation + thoughtful match

We match thoughtfully to support a healthy connection for both the elder and the volunteer.
